Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, the Texas State Capitol building stands as the largest state capitol in the nation. The distinctive rose exterior of this Renaissance Revival structure is made from Texas red granite, quarried just 50 miles away. Surpassing the height of U.S. Capitol by 15 feet, this stately building is situated atop one of Austin’s highest points and can be seen from various vantage points throughout the city. It is located in downtown Austin in the Capitol Complex, which includes the castle-like visitors center and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.
